Changing terms and conditions for Casual staff

Effective April 1, 2026, categories formerly called Student Casual and Casual 1 will no longer exist. Both categories will be rolled into what is currently referred to as Casual 2, and going forward will simply be called Casual.

The changes to the Collective Agreement resulting from the collapse of the Casual categories are as follows:

Article 7 - Safety, Wearing Apparel and Tools.
7.06(d)(i) will apply to all Casuals (an allowance of $12/month of service in a position where protective footwear is required.

Article 8 – Salaries
8.02 Rates of Pay
(a) Casual Level 1 Employees will be paid no less than 75% of the base pay. 
(b) Casual Level 2 and Auxiliary Employees will be paid no less than 100% of the base pay. 
(c) Effective April 2026, clause 8.02 (a) no longer applies. This means that all Casual staff will be paid the full rate for the position. 

Article 27 – Special Leave
27.03 and 27.04 
Bereavement leave and Compassionate care leave will apply to all Casuals.

Article 29 – Maternity Leave
29.14 – All Casual employees with any accrued sick leave remaining will be paid out when the Employee commences their leave for maternity reasons.
29.16 and 29.17 – Maternity Leave provisions apply (maternity leave for 6-8 weeks) and no guarantee of a position being available at the end of the leave.

Article 30 – Benefit Plans
30.14 - All Casual Employees will be entitled to Occupational Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance as well as the Employee and Family Assistance Plan (EFAP). 

Article 32 – Human Resources Development Fund (HRDF)
32.04(b) – All Casuals will be entitled a maximum of $500 per fiscal year to fund learning opportunities. This does not include University of Alberta credit courses.

Article A1/B1 Employment Types and Applications. 
A1.05 – Change of definition for Casual 1, Student Casual and Casual 2 and provisions for Casual 2 apply to all Casuals.  
A1.05(b) – Moving from Level 1 to Level 2 after 1000 hours no longer applies. 

Article A2/B2 – Hours of Work
The entire article will apply to all Casuals.

Article A5/B3 – Overtime
Overtime provisions will apply to all Casuals pursuant to A5 for Operating employees and B3 for Trust employees.

Article A10/B4 – Illness and Proof of Illness
All Casual employees will earn illness entitlements at the rate of 0.049296 hours per hours worked. A10 specifically A10.15; B4 specifically B4.07. 

Please note that any changes that affect pay will not be seen on paycheques until the April 24, 2026 pay.
